U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue recently announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will partner with National FFA to support youth and prepare the workforce of tomorrow for unique careers in agriculture.

Mark Poeschl, National FFA Organization chief executive officer, said the partnership is the “formalization of what has been an outstanding relationship between the USDA and the National FFA Organization.”

Poeschl and Perdue spoke during the National FFA Organization’s annual alumni breakfast July 26 during the State Presidents Conference in Washington, D.C. Representatives from FFA Associations across the nation gathered to listen to Perdue’s comments about the future of the agriculture industry.

Following their comments, Poeschl and Perdue signed a memorandum of understanding between USDA and National FFA.

“At National FFA, we are preparing our students to be tomorrow’s leaders in agriculture,” Poeschl said. “Through this MOU, USDA helps us continue our vision of growing leaders, building communities and strengthening agriculture. We look forward to our partnership and the ability to share our ideas with USDA.”

Under the newly signed MOU, USDA and National FFA will collaborate on both short- and long-term initiatives to motivate and prepare young people, connect them with opportunities in agriculture, food and natural resources systems, and build appreciation for the reach and importance of agriculture.

Poeschl said the memorandum is about strengthening agriculture and providing jobs in the industry for “those wearing the blue jackets.”

“The future is now,” Perdue said. “I want to mobilize the youth of our country to tell the story of agriculture.”
